Press Release: Tri City Railroad Announces COO and Vice President to Retire

June 27, 2016: Tri City Railroad announced today that John Miller, the company’s Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, will retire on June 30, 2016.

While working with Tri City Railroad, John’s contributions have led to the enhancement of existing relationships and continued growth of new business partnerships under his leadership. Additionally, John has contributed to maintaining excellence in operational performance.

John started his career in the railroad industry with the Milwaukee Road Railroad in June 1974 as an internal auditor. John became Manager – Budget and Responsibility Accounting in March 1979 and in addition assumed the Disbursement Accounting function in 1983. The Milwaukee was bankrupt at the time and John was a key member of the team involved in developing a successful plan of reorganization that resulted in the acquisition of the company by the Soo Line Railroad in 1985, with John being the primary accounting person responsible for coordinating the transfer of accounting functions from one railroad to the other. At Soo Line John was responsible for Disbursements and Billing and later Property Accounting. In 1986 John took a position as Director – Finance and Accounting for Lake States Division where he was responsible for the accounting function for a separate 1800 mile $85 million profit center. Lake States was put out to bid and was eventually acquired as Wisconsin Central Railroad. John accepted a position with WC in 1987 as its Director –General and Property Accounting and developed and implemented its general ledger and associated peripheral systems. After getting married John moved to California in 1990 and worked for Southern Pacific Railroad until the Union Pacific acquired it in 1996. John held several positions at SP and at the time of the merger John was the Director of Budgets for Distribution Services. While at the UP, John transferred to the Short Line Marketing Group in 1999 as Manager – Short Line Development with the responsibility for over 60 short line railroads connecting with UP in the western US. He held that position until accepting his position with Tri City Railroad as Vice President and Chief Operations Officer in March of 2015.

John’s retirement represents the culmination of over 42 years of service and commitment to the railroad industry. Tri City Railroad is grateful for the opportunity to work with John and wishes him all the best as he makes a well deserved transition to retirement and an opportunity to devote more time to his family and his lifelong support of the Green Bay Packers.
